Toyota has officially revived the legendary ‘FJ’ nameplate with the unveiling of the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ, a compact off-roader that pays homage to the brand’s rich 4×4 heritage while introducing a new level of agility and accessibility to the Land Cruiser family.

Although the FJ won’t be sold in America, its reveal has generated global excitement for its rugged design, strong off-road credentials, and the return of a name that symbolizes “Freedom and Joy”.

A Compact Powerhouse in the Land Cruiser Family

The new Land Cruiser FJ serves as the baby sibling to the 250-series Land Cruiser, sharing the same platform but with a shorter wheelbase, 270mm less, to be exact. Measuring 4575mm long, 1855mm wide, and 1960mm tall, it’s almost identical in size to the Land Rover Defender 90, placing it firmly in the compact off-roader segment.

Despite its smaller stature, Toyota promises the FJ maintains serious off-road ability. With ground clearance and approach angles similar to the 250 (215.3mm and 31 degrees, respectively) and a tight 5.5m turning circle, the FJ is designed for maneuverability on narrow trails without compromising its go-anywhere capability.

Built Tough with a Focus on Customization

Toyota describes the FJ as “lean but strong”, featuring bold flared wheel arches, muscular bumpers, and a design that communicates both strength and stability. Customization is a major focus, both front and rear bumpers can be easily removed and replaced, making repairs simpler for off-road adventurers.

Other personalization options include round headlights, cargo panels, and an engine snorkel, catering to those who like their vehicles to reflect their personality and off-road needs.

Simple Yet Functional Interior

Inside, the FJ takes inspiration from its larger sibling, the Land Cruiser 250. The functional cabin features a 12.5-inch infotainment screen, complemented by a lineup of physical buttons and switches for key controls, ideal for drivers who value practicality and tactile feedback, especially in rugged environments.

Power and Performance

Under the hood, the FJ is powered by a 2.7-litre petrol four-cylinder engine producing 161bhp and 181lb ft of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic gearbox and four-wheel drive. While performance figures are modest, Toyota emphasizes the model’s balanced driving dynamics, compact footprint, and versatility on and off the road.

Global Launch and Market Focus

The Land Cruiser FJ will launch first in Japan in mid-2025, with production taking place in Thailand. According to chief engineer Masaya Uchiyama, sales will expand to emerging markets across Africa, Asia, South America, and the Middle East, focusing on regions where durable off-road vehicles are in high demand.

Unfortunately for fans in America and Europe, Toyota currently has no plans to sell the FJ in those markets. However, as the industry rapidly evolves, especially with the growing demand for compact SUVs and electrified powertrains—Toyota could reconsider bringing a hybrid or mild-hybrid version to Western markets in the future.

Continuing the Land Cruiser Legacy

Toyota’s chief branding officer, Simon Humphries, emphasized that the FJ is part of the brand’s ongoing mission to make the Land Cruiser nameplate more accessible to a new generation of drivers.

“Two years ago we launched the Land Cruiser 250, going back to the origin to redefine the Land Cruiser,” Humphries said. “Now there is a new addition to the family.”

The Land Cruiser range now spans multiple models—the 250 at the center, the 300 at the peak, and the 70 as the workhorse—with the FJ serving as the compact, agile new member of this iconic lineup.

Toyota will showcase the FJ publicly for the first time at the Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo, where it’s expected to draw significant attention from off-road enthusiasts and nostalgic FJ Cruiser fans alike.

As Toyota puts it, the Land Cruiser story is far from over:

“The Land Cruiser will continue to evolve to meet societal demands while supporting the lives of customers around the world and remaining a vehicle they can trust.”

With its blend of heritage design, off-road prowess, and modern practicality, the new Toyota Land Cruiser FJ looks set to become a global favorite, even if, for now, we can only admire it from afar.
